Shilpi Akbar
Assistant Director for Employment, Birmingham City Council

Shilpi was appointed Assistant Director for Employment in 2009, with an extensive background in employment, skills and economic development.  Her role focuses on addressing unemployment and closing the skills gap, particularly for vulnerable young people and job seekers living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Shilpi is responsible for the council’s Business Support service working with partners and employers, industry bodies and increasingly the WMCA, to help transform the employment and skills landscape and create prospects for individuals.

Having designed and implemented the council’s Procurement Policy Framework for Jobs and Skills, Shilpi has shaped the Birmingham Youth Promise and the Cog digital platform to co-ordinate the city’s response to tackling youth unemployment by giving every registered young person access to training, apprenticeships and new careers.  This has been boosted by securing an investment package totalling over £50m from the EU and local partners, to help 16,000 NEET young people in Birmingham and North Solihull.

As the local authority sponsoring officer for High Speed Rail, the National College; Shilpi was involved in the winning ‘location’ bid, and is now working directly with the College team and partners to bring forward the Birmingham campus in time for opening in September 2017.
